Jackeline Dianderas es ingeniera industrial de profesión, pero su corazón le pertenece al océano, en especial a una parte del mar que está ubicada ahí por donde casi se termina Ica, en San Juan de Marcona. Este lugar tiene una gran historia de resiliencia por contar, pues su enorme comunidad de pescadores artesanales lleva casi 20 años trabajando en la recuperación del erizo rojo, producto emblema de la zona puesto en veda total en 2006 a causa de la sobreexplotación del recurso en la década de 1990.
Fue recién hasta 2015 que los pescadores de Marcona pudieron volver a montarse en sus embarcaciones y reencontrarse con el mar. Sin embargo, los retos ahora eran distintos: ¿cómo lograr que exista un equilibrio entre un comercio fructífero y una pesca responsable? Luego de haberlo perdido todo, el único camino fue empezar de cero estableciendo nuevas reglas para evitar que la historia se repita. Es ahí que entra Jackeline Dianderas en la ecuación. Parte de su aporte como ingeniera industrial y consultora especialista en proyectos pesqueros fue lograr que exista un desarrollo sostenible para los pescadores artesanales y revalorizar su trabajo, todo esto desde su alcance como parte del equipo técnico de la Asociación El Arca de Noé de Marcona. Su enfoque fue apostar por conectar al productor como eslabón de confianza entre el mar peruano y la cocina, buscando una genuina trazabilidad del producto junto al comercio sostenible. Una compra que no solo consista en una transacción fría, sino que a la par garantice que el erizo pueda ser preservado en el tiempo.
Gran parte del éxito del proyecto de recuperación del erizo en Marcona se debe al profundo nivel de conocimiento que tienen los pescadores. Del mismo modo en que cada uno conoce su hogar, ellos recorren el océano identificando las áreas en donde este animal habita y su comportamiento bajo el agua. “El erizo antes tenía fechas marcadas de desove en verano, por el aumento de temperatura en el agua. Ahora ya no”, explica Jackeline. Actualmente, los cambios de temperatura ocasionan un desequilibrio en el comportamiento reproductivo de los erizos, produciendo que entren en desove mucho antes de lo esperado. “Nos ha pasado que, en pleno invierno, algunos erizos entran en desove porque llegó agua caliente a alguna zona”, agrega.
La geografía accidentada de Marcona hace que sea muy complicado mantener protocolos estándar para todo el tramo marítimo de su región. “Las vedas reproductivas deberíamos empezar a ajustarlas a la realidad de cada región. Si el recurso no está desovando en ese momento, y tú le pones una veda es tirar esfuerzo en vano. No entran en reproducción así”, comenta la ingeniera. Es por eso que los pescadores de Marcona afirman realizar una pesca ancestral, artesanal y tradicional, porque conservan una forma de conexión y cariño con su entorno que les permite leer el comportamiento de la naturaleza que los rodea. Ellos pueden interpretar el océano y, por ello, son los indicados para saber cómo protegerlo si se les da las herramientas oportunas.
Para Jackeline no hay alegría más grande que la de haber podido estudiar una carrera que le esté permitiendo volver a su amado Marcona y contribuir a su recuperación. Al día de hoy, COPMAR representa 17 organizaciones sociales pescadores artesanales (OSPAS): más de 800 pescadores protegiendo a los erizos rojos de la depredación y embarcaciones ilegales. El pronóstico es bueno porque son muchos los que han optado por transitar el camino de lo correcto.
Aunque sus estudios la identifican como ingeniera, su deseo es convertirse en aprendiz de pescadora artesanal. No porque desee desempeñar ese oficio, sino porque quiere comprender desde adentro el proceso de la pesca de erizos y con ese conocimiento poder exponer sus ideas estando al mismo nivel de debate de un hombre que trabaja en el rubro. “La pesca artesanal es una actividad usualmente heredada, que se transmite por la enseñanza de los padres a sus hijos. ¿Tú crees que los padres quieren llevar a sus hijas? No las dejan. Aislar a la mujer como un ser débil es algo que tenemos que sacar del chip”, comparte. En Marcona no son muchas, pero sí existen las mujeres pescadoras. “En el momento más crítico ellas se echaron al hombro a sus familias para mantener su canasta básica y entraron al mar para pescar y colectar algas, y lo hacen muy bien”, explica Jackeline con admiración. Aunque aún falta mucho para lograr cambiar esta situación, parte de su labor ha sido la promoción del rol de la mujer y la familia en el desarrollo de las pesquerías sostenibles, que es un objetivo del PPD-Marcona. Es por ello, que las OSPAS dentro de COPMAR pueden brindar a las madres de familia formar parte del ingreso económico para el hogar y romper tabúes labrando el mar.
Por lo pronto, una de sus preocupaciones es que la cuota del erizo rojo salga lo antes posible. “Lo que estamos viendo es que cada vez que esta cuota queda suspendida, la pesquería vuelve a un estado de peligro y no queremos eso”, indica. Además, Jackeline resalta la importancia de mantener vigente la resolución ministerial N° 2382011-PRODUCE, que es la que protege a San Juan de Marcona de la depredación masiva del erizo rojo por parte de los pescadores ilegales. “Es la única que nos ha permitido mantener al erizo protegido y que el espacio no puede ser tocado a menos que haya una cuota para aprovecharlo”, comenta. Dentro de Marcona, este valioso insumo puede ser extraído por aquellos que siguen las reglas del juego: no extraer más del límite permitido (300 kg) y permite que se extraiga solo lo necesario para no afectar al ecosistema.El siguiente paso en la lista de Jackeline para Marcona es exportar de manera directa los erizos rojos. “Hasta ahora no se ha visto a una asociación pesquera artesanal que esté exportando. Ojalá lleguemos muy pronto a ese siguiente paso, asegurando un comercio sostenible, un producto sustentable en base a una actividad que no solo es artesanal, sino regenerativa”, afirma. Solo el tiempo nos permitirá apreciar el gran impacto de su labor para preservar el erizo de la zona y cosechar los frutos de su entrañable amor por el mar peruano.

She accomplished this within her role as part of the technical team of the El Arca de Noé Association in Marcona. Her focus was on connecting the producer as a trusted link between the Peruvian sea and the culinary world, aiming for genuine traceability alongside sustainable commerce. Just as one knows their own home, they navigate the ocean, identifying the areas where this creature lives and its behavior underwater. «The urchin used to have marked spawning seasons in the summer due to rising water temperatures. Now, it doesn’t,» Jackeline explains. Today, temperature changes disrupt the urchin’s reproductive behavior, causing them to enter the spawning phase much earlier than expected. «It has happened that, even in mid-winter, some urchins start spawning because warm water reached a certain area,» she adds.
Marcona’s rugged geography makes it difficult to maintain standard protocols across its entire maritime region. «We should start adjusting reproductive bans to the reality of each region. If the resource isn’t spawning at that moment, imposing a ban is a wasted effort. They don’t enter reproduction that way,» says the engineer. That’s why Marcona’s fishermen claim to practice an ancestral, artisanal, and traditional fishing style—they maintain a deep connection and affection for their environment, allowing them to read the surrounding nature. Therefore, they can interpret the ocean and are the right ones to protect it if given the proper tools.
For Jackeline, there is no greater joy than having studied a career that allows her to return to her beloved Marcona and contribute to its recovery. Today, Copmar represents 15 fishing associations (also cales OSPAS): over 800 fishers protecting red seaurchins from overharvesting and illegal vessels. The outlook is positive because many have chosen to follow the path of doing things right.
Though her studies identify her as an engineer, her desire is to become a learner of artisanal fishing—not because she wants to take up the profession, but because she wants to understand the urchin fishing process from within and, with that knowledge, be able to present her ideas on an equal footing with men in the field. «Artisanal fishing is typically inherited, passed down from parents to their children. Do you think fathers want to take their daughters? They don’t. Seeing women as weak is something we need to erase from our minds,» she says. In Marcona, there aren’t many, but there are women fishermen. «In the most critical moments, they carried their families on their shoulders to maintain basic needs; they went into the sea to fish and harvest algae, and they do it very well,» Jackeline admires. Although there is still much to be done to change this situation, part of her work has been promoting the role of women and families in developing sustainable fisheries. For this reason, the associations within Copmar can offer mothers the chance to contribute economically to their households, breaking taboos while working the sea.
One of her concerns is ensuring the red urchin quota is set as soon as possible. «What we’re seeing is that every time this quota is suspended, the fishery goes back into a state of danger, and we don’t want that,» she states. Additionally, Jackeline emphasizes the importance of maintaining Ministerial Resolution No. 238-2011-PRODUCE, which protects San Juan de Marcona from mass depredation of the red urchin by larger vessels. «It’s the only thing that has allowed us to protect the urchin, and this area can’t be touched unless there’s a quota to make use of it,» she adds. In Marcona, this valuable resource can be harvested by those who play by the rules: not exceeding the allowed limit (300 kg) and only taking what is necessary to avoid harming the ecosystem.
Jackeline’s next step for Marcona is to export red sea urchins directly. «So far, no artisanal fishing association has begun exporting. Hopefully, we’ll reach that next step soon, ensuring sustainable commerce and a product that’s both sustainable and based on an activity that’s not only artisanal but regenerative,» she says. Only time will show the profound impact of her work in preserving the area’s urchins and reaping the rewards of her deep love for the Peruvian sea.
